To tweet and preach and work as missionaries do

Most of “Generation Y” are naturals when it comes to computers.  They tweet, Facebook “stalk,” and check-in on Foursquare.  This might mean that they are excellent time wasters, but it also means that they have certain skills that older generations may lack.  Elder David Bednar said of the skills of Generation Y-ers, “Your fingers have been trained to text and tweet to accelerate and advance the work of the Lord.”  This means that acquired technological skills can be more than self-serving--they can be used to serve the Lord.

  1. In connection to your post "When your BlackBerry becomes a CrackBerry": when we are purchasing a new device or investing time to learn a new technology we should consider whether doing so will help or hinder us from doing the Lord's work. Such devices and technologies might help us to the Lord's work because we are better able to connect and interact with other people; that is, we have more opportunities to share the gospel. However, these devices and technologies might hinder us by presented us with many alluring distractions and time wasters.

  2. There are many skills out there that people have that could be put to use for good if the people were to take the time to realize what it is that they have and that it really could be used to benefit others. People really should take the time to consider what they're good at, and think about how it is that they could use it to benefit others.

  3. Having the skills to do the Lord's work isn't enough on it's own, we have to actively follow the counsel of the brother and share the gospel with these tools. I know I am guilty of not heeding this completely. We must do better.
